Not a whole lot to say about it but I attended the Vancouver Ubuntu loco team meeting this week. I didn’t connect on a professional level with anyone (unfortunately) but it was still interesting to meet some local Linux enthusiasts and see what sort of characters would pop in. One dude in particular was pretty proud of himself for using the pun Microsquash (mocking Microsoft of course) about 5 separate times. He even looked vaguely like RMS. Among the things discussed, one of the members gave a pretty good overview of his Mythbuntu setup, which is basically an Ubuntu distribution that serves as a home media center (like a tivo and an xbox360 rolled into one. DVR + media hub). I’ve long contemplated setting up a home media server but I don’t really watch enough tv nor do I have the equipment to deem it necessary. I was actually a bit unimpressed with the dull user interface (not something I say often about open source material). If anyone has ideas of what to set up instead, I’m definitely interested to hear your viewpoint. Anywho, a couple pictures as always.
ooo and I got a free sticker out of the deal! I’ll definitely be attending more of these meetings as they come up.

Thanks for the review, and it was great to see you at the meeting.
One important goal of Ubuntu Vancouver LoCo: Diversification. Not just a place to meet “Linux enthusiasts”. As we have grown from a handful of members to over one hundred in the span of a few short months, I’ve seen our membership change in a direction that more closely matches the diversity of our fine city.
More to come on that.
Cheers,
Randall.

I’ll definitely write a bit more about the group now that I’ve gotten a bit more involved and have begun to understand its scope. Lots of positive things to say and awareness to raise. Maybe just maybe it’ll convince a few of my friends to attend
